It's All About Balance

Juggling it all can definitely be overwhelming, so I try to be creative when it comes to gaining balance in my life. During my first semester in medical school, I found myself becoming completely consumed in my studies and constantly feeling like I was missing out on all the fun. I knew going into school that I was going to have to make some sacrifices, especially when it came to my social life. The problem came when I noticed school coming before friends and family. I remember it was about half way through the fall semester and I cried because I couldn't throw Rosie a birthday party. No joke. I was sobbing because my dog could not have a proper 4th birthday celebration. I am telling ya, med school can really mess with your head! ha! But that was also the moment that I put my foot down and regained control over my life.

I still put school high on my priority list, don't get me wrong, but I have found creative ways to fit in activities so that I can keep my relationships, my mind, and my spirit strong. I talked about this a bit in my post on surviving first year, but taking time for exercise, nights with friends, and date night is super important to me. It is even better if I can combine a few of these into one! I did this last week by going mountain biking with Baxter after a long day of class. After being inside all day, just fresh air alone can be therapeutic! We loaded up the bikes, Rosie, and a ton of water because it was HOT! I was humbly reminded how out of shape I am, but it felt so good to get a fun workout in that didn't involve the gym. It was even better that I got to spend some quality time with Baxter.

What kind of things do you do to help juggle life and work/school?
